Gold Medal judges voted the Haven Bay catering team as Ireland’s best healthcare caterers: ‘Innovation is the name of the game at this excellent nursing home and retirement village in Kinsale. The team’s relentless quest for excellence has inspired them to create a first-class catering service for Haven Bay residents. The formula has been so successful that the caterers are now branching out, opening a new production facility to create a range of soft and puréed meals which are high in nutrition and tailored to suit older palates. We think this business is going to grow and grow.’

Award-winning Nurse Karen Lordan

Karen’s nursing and nutritional qualifications combine to formulate “Karen’s Kitchen”. Karen analysed Residents’ weight and their relationship with food. In collaboration with the residents and the catering team, 2 weight management food plans were devised and implemented to assist those who were both overweight and underweight.

The outcome from Karen’s Kitchen showed that 66% of Residents who were on a weight reduction plan lost weight. The average weight loss was 8%. In addition, 66% of Residents who were underweight gained weight, the average weight gain being 9%. In addition to better weight management, food intake was optimised resulting in improved health and well- being.

Kinsale ‘Community Garden’ award 2010, 2011 and 2012

Jim has been actively involved with the award winning garden at Haven Bay Care Centre. Our wonderful working Organic Garden was created under the guidance of our Caretaker Jim Grennan and supported by Kinsale College of Further Education’s Permaculture Students. With Jim’s help residents of the Care Centre and the apartments selected what they wanted to grow and these range from soft flower planting to vegetables including herbs and fruit trees. Jim has encouraged residents to bring and plant plants from their former homes thus helping the transition from leaving their homes to a new life at Haven Bay Care Centre.
